a man named peter

today was the annual wounded warriors weekend event that's held on our lake, and i was working as a lifeguard over there. and today i met a man named peter.

peter has severe brain damage (or, as he says jokingly, dain bramage). it's been three years since his accident--i don't know the specifics of it--and he has since had to relearn pretty much everything. he even  had to relearn his own identity.

but talking to him, you'd barely know. his mouth lilts a bit. he has a metal brace on his leg and uses a walking stick. his right arms shakes when he lifts it. but i feel so blessed to have met him. he was friendly and kind and intelligent and i think that he's amazing for being able to do all he has with his disability. he didn't let it stop him. he's since gone back to school and he is getting a degree in political science.

and i hope that i can begin trying to be as strong and brave as peter is. we really don't always realize how lucky we have it.
